Orthogonal Contrast Codes

The purpose of this simple, unadorned web page is to make availale for testing and comment an applet for finding orthogonal contrast codes that would complete a set of specified codes. The applet on this page uses Singular Value Decomposition of a matrix of specified codes to find the codes that complete the orthogonal set.

In the applet below, enter appropriate numbers for the number of levels and the number of known codes. Then press the "Next" button. The final display of the applet only has room for about 10 levels.

The applet then displays text boxes for entry of the specified codes. After those codes have been entered, click the "Compute" button to generate the complete set of orthogonal codes. Be aware that the applet currently does no checking to determine if valid contrast codes have been entered or if the specified codes are orthogonal. Note: One of the generated "codes" is a constant vector corresponding to the intercept and its sign might be negative. All other codes are orthogonal contrast codes.
